While Paramour is off to final edits, I am getting all the final touches done. That means working on things like the book cover even though I don’t have the final page count of the book. You’re probably wondering what page count has to do with book cover design. Wellllllll, even a few pages off can mean a book spine that is not centered. (This is also one a reason to make a cover that is seamless in design from front to back). Because of the page count issue, I cannot really make final adjustments to the cover until I have the interior, and I cannot work on the interior until I get the final edit back and apply those changes.

And STILL! Here I am trying to tinker away, because I know that the closer I can get to finished, the more time I’ll save later. One of the things I’m trying to get right today is the part of the spine where I added “Of Ballads and Banshees Book One.” I want it to be clear this is a series, and many readers have expressed that they don’t like having to work hard to figure out which book in a series they are looking at. I don’t blame them either; that also bothers me!
I don’t think there’s one right way to do this. If you look at these two examples in the photo, Shanghai Immortal puts the series name and book one at the top and author name underneath while The Raven Boys puts the author’s name on top and the series and book one beneath that. I think mine is working with my name on top and the series name closer to the title, but I just can’t tell…. I think it’s also harder because I don’t have the other books in series made yet (even if I am pretty sure of all the names) I want them all to line up exactly when they are next to each other, so I can’t tell if I’m giving myself the space for that, or shooting myself in the foot. I’m also wondering if the series and book one needs some kind of framing like lines above and below. Thoughts?
